A CAST BRASS ROUNDEL BEARING THE INTERTWINED INITIALS "BRC" OF THE BEIRA RAILWAY COMPANY AND LIGHTLY CURVED TO ENABLE IT TO BE CARRIED ON THE SIDE OF A LOCOMOTIVE SMOKEBOX. The 2ft gauge Beira Railway was built to link the port of Beira with Umtali (Mutare) and took four years to construct. Opening in 1898, the line was originally operated by 2ft gauge locomotives built by the Falcon Engine Works Loughborough and the Glasgow Railway Engineering Company. The line was subsequently converted to 3ft 6in gauge in 1900 and some of the narrow gauge locos sold to a Mozambique sugar estate and also to South African Railways. The Beira Railway Company was later incorporated into Rhodesian Railways. Six of the former BRC 4-4-0 steam locos built by Falcon during the period 1895 to1897 reportedly survive. Two are in Zimbabwe, one at the NRZ museum, and the second at Century Park, Bulawayo, with two others in South Africa, one at the James Hall Museum, Johannesburg, and the other at the Sandstone Steam Railway, Ficksburg. A further two were repatriated from Mozambique to the UK in 2000.

This company, at its greatest extent, in 1882, operated services over 140 route miles in Manchester, Salford, Patricroft, Oldham, Stalybridge and Stockport, using 500 trams, 5300 horses and had 20 depots.
