Lot 150 BR Steel Steam Locomotive REPLACEMENT Smokebox Numberplate "60009" as carried by a Gresley designed ex LNER A4 4-6-2 Pacific named 'UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA'. Built at Doncaster Works in June 1937. Allocated to only Edinburgh Haymarket and Aberdeen Ferryhill throughout its working life it was withdrawn from the latter in June 1966. Purchased directly from BR by John Cameron in July 1966 it initially worked on the now defunct Lochty Private Railway. Having been used on many steam specials over the years it is now out of ticket and currently resides at Bury Transport Museum. However the hope is it will move soon to a (now planning permission has been granted) new location at Balbuthie Farm, St. Monans, Fife, where it will eventually go on permanent display.
