Brass Steam Locomotive Nameplate "CECIL RAIKES". As fitted to a Beyer Peacock 0-6-4T No. 2605 of 1885 and one of an initial batch of eight locomotives delivered to the Mersey Railway prior to opening for working trains through the railway's tunnel between Liverpool and Birkenhead. With steam working not entirely successful underground the M.R was the first steam railway in Britain to be converted to electric traction in 1903. The locomotive was one of two which were sold to Shipley Colliery, Derbyshire, in 1904 where it worked for fifty years. Following storage at Derby Loco Works it was presented to National Museums Liverpool by B.R in 1965. The locomotive is not currently on public display and is stored at the museum's storage site at Bootle. Cecil Raikes was a British Conservative Party politician. He was Chairman of Ways and Means between 1874 and 1880 and later served as Postmaster General.
