Brass LNER WORKSPLATE from "COCK O' THE NORTH". The original Worksplate from one of the most iconicand well photographed locos ever built: Gresley's masterpiece, the prototype of his P2 2-8-2 class No. 2001. Built Doncaster in 1934 for the heavy Waverley - Aberdeen expresses, via the Forth Bridge. Shedded at Haymarket. Gresley was a friend of Chapelon and Cock o' The North was taken by OVS Bullied (who had worked on the design as assistant to Gresley) to the SNCF test plant in Vitry, France. Cock o' The North was rebuilt by Gresley with a (Bugatti) A4 type front end in 1937. After Gresley's death the loco was rebuilt again by Thompson in 1944 as a Pacific and was a forerunner of his A2 class. The Worksplate bears an additional casting in brass which was added in 1944 to signify the rebuilding. Became BR 60501 under nationalisation and was shedded latterly at York. A classic piece of railway history. Surely a great opportunity to acquire this iconic plate. |

Brass Worksplate - This rare WD Worksplate was carried by an ex North Staffordshire Railway 0-6-2T No 158 (LMS 2253) built at Stoke Locomotive Works in 1923 and sold by the LMS to the WD in 1936 becoming Longmoor Military Railway No 20. The plate details the locomotive's history in full and in that respect is highly unusual if not unique. The Worksplate was fitted to the loco's bunker at the Longmoor Military Railway when the locomotive was named "MARLBOROUGH". The locomotive was allocated the WD number 70207. At a later point the plate was moved to below the nameplate on the side of the tank where it remained until the loco was withdrawn in 1947 and subsequently scrapped. |
