Friday 18th to Sunday 20th February 2022

Very Special Smokebox Plate

Ex Black 5 No. "45110" was entered.

Black 5 No. 45110 hauled the Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Victoria and return legs of the Fifteen Guinea Special on the 11th August 1968. Black 5 No. 45305 was allocated to handle this section of the railtour but failed the night before with a collapsed firebox brick arch and was replaced by 45110.

After hauling the Fifteen Guinea Special, 45110 was purchased for preservation by David Porter's Stanier Black Five Preservation Society late in 1968.

It was towed from Lostock Hall to Ashford in January 1969 where it occasionally was placed on show. After deciding that the locomotive should have a more active role it was considered that the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) would be a good home for it. As a result over a few days in August 1970 the engine was moved as part of a number of freight trains to Bridgnorth. It operated on the SVR in 1970 and after hydraulic testic over the winter returned to service again in 1971. In September 1971 it was named RAF Biggin Hill and at this time it was approved for running on BR track.

In 1974 it was purchased by the SVR(H).

S.O.S! Incredible Rescue - Historic Nameplate retrieved from wheelie-bin!

Neil Booth, Specialist Railwayana Auctioneer and Director of Railwayana Auctions UK Ltd, was recently invited and instructed to retrieve and consign a deceased gentleman's collection of railwayana in Ashover, a stone's throw from Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

His widow advised that she couldn't "lift the heavy signs with numbers on" and that she had tried to put "the long thin one in the bin but the lid wouldn't shut and I didn't think the bin men would take it like that!".

Needless to say that the heavy signs to which she referred were named G.W.R Cabside Numberplates - but to crown it all, the 'thin one' was no less than a genuine L&NWR brass nameplate from 4-4-0 No. 1730 "SNIPE" (LMS No. 5376 from July 1927, then No. 25376 from October 1936) built at Crewe Works in October 1911.

Said Neil: "We were so close to nearly losing what is an important and historic nameplate. I must say that I am grateful that that lid didn't close - and so was the widow when I explained that it could fetch as much as £10,000 at auction!".

The Nameplate is included in the September 10th - 12th auction.

Special Crewe Railwayana Postal/Email/Telephone auction of L.M.S 'Jubilee' Class items. It will be available at the Viewing Day on Saturday September 4th at Crewe Centre, Vernon Way, Crewe, Cheshire CW1 2DB. Doors open 10am-5pm. Courtesy Shuttle Bus runs between Crewe main line station and the Heritage Centre from 9am to 6pm. Usual £5 admission to Heritage Centre applies. Free admission to children under 12.

GBRf locomotive named in honour of
Captain Tom Moore

Freight operator GB Railfreight, has thanked Captain Tom Moore for his fundraising efforts for the NHS with a birthday surprise – a Class 66 freight locomotive named in his honour.

The naming took place at Eastleigh to coincide with Captain Moore's 100th birthday (30 April). The nameplates were unveiled by GB Railfreight Managing Director John Smith, with Captain Moore watching the ceremony from home. GBRf had previously outshopped No. 66731 in a special 'Thank You NHS' livery and this locomotive was the obvious choice to be named in his honour.

Neil Booth, Director of Railwayana Auctions UK Ltd, came up with the idea of naming a locomotive in honour of Captain Tom.

Mr Booth said "Inspired by the fundraising efforts of Captain Tom, I thought that it would be a wonderful idea to honour him with his nameplate on a locomotive that travels the country so that lots of people could see it. Once we had Captain Tom's family's consent, Procast of Cleckheaton bent over backwards to cast the full size nameplates for the engine and the smaller presentation plate for the family in just seven days."

Neil delivered the third 'presentation plate' to Captain Moore's family the day before his birthday, alongside a gift presentation plate The Duke of Wellington's Regiment, Capt Tom's old regiment.

Fundraising for the NHS continues as Hornby has sought permission to use Neil's nameplate wording and announced a limited edition run of 500 models of the NHS 'Captain Tom' Class 66, with profits going direct to NHS charities.
